This session examines health insurance benefits design through a trust and communication lens, helping administrators balance rising costs with retention, engagement, and workforce expectations. Participants explore various benefits structures and how clear communication of what you do offer can protect trust during change.

Sarah has spent her 30+ year career in Human Resources with the objective of linking strategy and employee performance to help businesses achieve a goal driven culture. She has developed recruitment strategies, compensation and benefits structures, training programs, engagement surveys and solutions, performance management processes, employee relations and compliance plans for medical practices, in addition business sectors as higher education, apparel, and banking. Her background is further broadened by the 5 years she spent in the Air Force working on fighter jets. Sarah has written textbook chapters on HR, most recently in 2024 for the Audiology Practice Management Handbook with Brian Taylor and Robert Traynor. In addition to a Master’s Degree in Human Resources that kicked off her career, she has a random degree in Apparel Design from the Art Institute of Portland.

Will joined USI Insurance in 2013 as an Employee Benefits Consultant in the Portland, Oregon office. He serves as a consulting team leader for his employer clients and brings with him 30 years of industry experience with medium and large employer clients in both public and private sectors. 

His substantial industry experience includes technology, manufacturing, transportation, healthcare, financial services, forest products, construction and professional services; as well as clients in many other industry segments.

Will’s career in employee benefits started at an insurance carrier where he was 
a national account underwriter for over six years; during this time he focused on employer groups with 5,000+ employees. Capitalizing on that experience, he transitioned into employee benefits consulting, working as an underwriting consultant. This primarily included consulting for larger organizations with self-insured health plan risks.
Summary of experience includes working as a Senior National Accounts Underwriter at Standard Insurance Company, Underwriting Consultant at Mercer and Employee Benefits Consultant at McGriff, Seibels and Williams, Inc. 

Will is a licensed Life & Health advisor in all fifty states and the District of Columbia. He is a member of the National Association of Health Underwriters (NAHU) and serves on consulting advisory boards and councils for Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield of Oregon and United Healthcare. 
Will earned his Bachelor of Science in Economics with a quantitative focus from Oregon State University.
